Oregon defeats Ohio State in 1939 NCAA final

In 1939, in the first NCAA men’s college basketball tournament, participants would have had to predict the outcome of seven games.

To determine the participating schools, the United States was divided into eight districts. District selection committees then chose which team would represent their district in the tournament.

Regional semifinals and finals were played in Philadelphia and San Francisco between March 17 and 21.

The championship game between Ohio State and Oregon took place on March 27 in Evanston, Ill., at Patten Gymnasium on the Northwestern University campus.

Oregon never trailed, and the Webfeet defeated the Buckeyes 46–33. This was before the 3-pointer.

The Chicago History Museum notes that thousands of historical basketball images can be browsed in its CHM Images collection at https://ow.ly/79Oh50YyIsy.
