Maricopa County Approves Modernized Zoning Ordinance

Maricopa County, Arizona – The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a modernized zoning ordinance. The updated rules expand housing flexibility, streamline processes, and update guidance for emerging technologies such as data centers.

The revised ordinance allows for multiple accessory dwelling units and short-term rentals in line with state law. It removes unnecessary steps for smaller multi-family projects and speeds up the processing of Temporary Use Permits. The changes also clarify definitions for new technologies, eliminate outdated restrictions in several zoning districts, consolidate land-use categories, and remove more than 50 pages of outdated rules.

More than 160 stakeholders and hundreds of residents contributed to the months-long effort. Additional information about the updated zoning ordinance and the project background is available at Maricopa.gov/ZoningUpdate.
