Phoenix Officer Shoots Man in Warrant Raid
Phoenix Police Department officials released a briefing regarding an officer-involved shooting on September 2, 2025, near 17th Avenue and Tonto Street. Officers from the Special Assignment Unit (SAU) were executing a search warrant for a separate investigation. As they announced their presence and forced open the door of an apartment, a man inside fired shots at the officers. In response, one SAU officer returned fire, injuring the man.
After the shooting, two males exited the apartment without injuries and were detained by police. The injured man left the apartment, received medical aid at the scene, and was transported by the Phoenix Fire Department to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He is currently receiving treatment and will be booked on charges related to the incident when he is released.
A handgun believed to have been used by the shooter was found inside the apartment. The officer involved in the shooting has been with the SAU for over 17 years with Phoenix PD.
The case is under criminal investigation by the Major Incident Division of the Arizona Department of Public Safety and is being reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. An administrative investigation is also being conducted by the Phoenix Police Department. Further conclusions regarding the officers' actions and department policy will be provided once all facts are known.
