Phoenix Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation
The Phoenix Police Department has released a Critical Incident Briefing video containing audio and visuals related to an officer-involved shooting on August 31, 2025. The incident occurred near 20th Street and Southern Avenue.
The events began when a two-officer patrol unit stopped a man riding a bicycle at night without a headlight near 20th Street and Sunland Avenue. After the man initially attempted to elude the officers on his bike, he eventually stopped and stood next to it on 20th Street. When officers exited their vehicle and moved to contact him, the man ran. The officers pursued him on foot and attempted to take him into custody.
During the struggle to detain him, the man resisted arrest. One officer observed the man pull out a knife and stepped back while warning his partner of the threat. As one officer removed his gun, the second officer moved away. It was at that moment that the officer-involved shooting took place.
Responding officers rendered medical aid and the Phoenix Fire Department transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. No one else was injured.
The officer involved, who is assigned to the South Mountain Precinct and has served with the department for over two years, is part of an ongoing investigation. The incident is under criminal investigation by the Major Incident Division of the Arizona Department of Public Safety and is being reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. An administrative investigation is also being conducted by the Phoenix Police Department.
Further conclusions regarding the officers' actions will be made after the investigations are completed.
