Arizona Bill Secures Chase Field's Future
Phoenix, AZ – The state legislature is currently considering HB2704, a bill that would create a dedicated funding mechanism for the maintenance and upgrade of Chase Field. The legislation aims to keep the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field for the next 30 years. Supporters of the bill include the Phoenix Community Alliance, the City of Phoenix, and Maricopa County.
HB2704 is designed to recapture sales and income taxes from spending at Chase Field and from the incomes of Diamondbacks employees and players. The bill is not a new tax and includes amendments that impose penalties on the Diamondbacks if they leave Arizona before the agreement expires. The team is also required to return monies from the renovation fund if they depart early. Additionally, the Diamondbacks plan to contribute directly to most of the estimated cost for repairs at the stadium.
Since its opening in 1998, Chase Field and the Arizona Diamondbacks have played a significant role in the economic growth of downtown Phoenix. Chase Field has generated $5.4 billion in Arizona’s GDP and hosts 81 home games each season, along with other major events such as World Series games, the World Baseball Classic, and the MLB All-Star Game. The venue also supports large concerts for 40,000 or more attendees and benefits over 230 street-level, locally owned businesses, particularly during the summer months.
Supporters of HB2704 are encouraged to contact their representatives to back the legislation.
