Maricopa County Solstice: Heat Safety Guidelines Issued

Maricopa County in Arizona marked the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, with a series of public safety recommendations. County officials advised residents to stay indoors with air conditioning whenever possible and to use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher at least 30 minutes before going outside, reapplying as needed. They also reminded people to drink water before they feel thirsty, wear lightweight, breathable clothing, and avoid leaving children, pets, or others in parked cars.

Officials emphasized that fans are not sufficient to provide relief when temperatures exceed 90°F and encouraged everyone to recognize the signs of heat stroke and seek medical help promptly. They further advised checking on friends, neighbors, and particularly seniors during extreme heat. Additional resources are available for those looking for more information.
