Phoenix Stop Turns Violent, Officer Shoots Aggressive Man

On May 25, 2025, a patrol officer from the Desert Horizon Precinct stopped a vehicle near 25th Street and Cactus Road in Phoenix. During the stop, the driver, who was already standing outside his car, became verbally aggressive when the officer explained the reason for the stop and asked for his driver’s license.

The situation escalated when the man demanded a supervisor and refused to follow the officer’s instructions. As his behavior became more aggressive, the officer called for additional units. The confrontation turned violent when the man struck the officer and reached for his holstered weapon. In the ensuing struggle, the officer shot the man.

A witness filmed the incident and showed a passerby running to assist the officer by trying to pull the man away. Responding officers provided medical aid and applied a tourniquet to the man, who was later transported by the Phoenix Fire Department to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The man was released from the hospital the next day and booked into the Maricopa County Jail.

The officer, who has approximately four years of service with the department, sustained several injuries during the attack. He received treatment at a hospital and was subsequently released.

The incident is currently under criminal investigation by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and is also the subject of an administrative review. Officials will determine if the officers’ actions were in line with department policy and the law once the investigation is complete.
