EPA Rescinds Guidance on Pollution Penalties

Maricopa County officials announced that the EPA has decided to rescind its previous guidance, which could have penalized states for pollution that is beyond their control. Chairman Thomas Galvin and Supervisor Debbie Lesko held a joint statement regarding the decision, noting that they had met with EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin in March. During that meeting, county officials expressed that the existing guidance has made it challenging for states like Arizona to prove the effects of international air pollution, which could lead to increased regulation. Administrator Zeldin described the new announcement as a positive step in balancing clean air efforts with economic development. The county leaders also acknowledged Senator Mark Kelly for his work on the issue.
