Authorities report that scammers are taking over legitimate rental listings by using stolen photos and posting ads for homes they do not own. The fraudsters lure potential renters with prices much lower than similar homes and use unauthorized methods such as smart lock codes to give fake tours of the properties.

Investigators note that the scammers often request payments through wire transfers, gift cards, or cash apps. In addition, they supply fake leases that appear official. The department advises prospective tenants to verify property ownership using the Maricopa County Assessor’s website and to check if the landlord is a licensed real estate agent on the Arizona Department of Real Estate website. They also suggest cross-checking addresses on trusted real estate websites.

Authorities urge residents to be cautious, especially when a deal seems too good to be true.
