Tempe Launches New Opioid Response Plan for Safety

Staff Report / tempelocal.org

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health has released preliminary data on drug overdoses in Tempe, Arizona, covering the years 2019 to 2023.

In 2019, there were 455 fatal overdoses and 72 non-fatal overdoses reported in Tempe. The numbers saw a slight increase in 2020, with 483 fatal overdoses and 89 non-fatal overdoses. In 2021, the figures continued to rise, reaching 508 fatal overdoses and 105 non-fatal overdoses. However, in 2022, both categories showed a decline, with 472 fatal overdoses and 97 non-fatal overdoses. The trend shifted again in 2023, where there were 426 fatal overdoses and 90 non-fatal overdoses.

To address these issues, Tempe has initiated a new opioid response plan aimed at providing support, resources, and education to combat opioid misuse. This plan is funded by national opioid settlements and focuses on prevention, recovery, resiliency, and enforcement to continue reducing drug-related fatalities and non-fatal overdoses.
