Tempe reports 18 heat-related deaths; county records 430

TEMPE, Ariz. — The City of Tempe says heat is a predictable risk in the community during the summer months, and the latest data shows it can become dangerous faster than many people expect.

According to the 2025 Heat-Related Deaths Report from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, 430 people died from heat-related causes last year, including 18 in Tempe. That is the second year in a row that deaths have declined, but it remains too many lives lost.

  • Many deaths happen on days that aren’t considered extreme heat
  • Most happen outdoors
  • Indoor spaces can still be dangerous when cooling isn’t working

If your AC isn’t working or you’re worried about the cost of running it, Tempe offers cooling centers where you can safely get out of the heat.

Tempe asks residents to check in on neighbors, friends and family, especially older adults, people with health conditions, and those without reliable shelter. A quick call or visit can make a difference.
