Maricopa's Unsheltered Homelessness Soars Amid Funding Cuts
A recent report from the Tempe Community Action Agency shows that homelessness is increasing in Maricopa County. The 2025 Point-In-Time Count report found that the population of unsheltered individuals has risen by 28 percent. Meanwhile, the overall homeless population is up by 3 percent, and the number of sheltered individuals is down by 16 percent.
According to the report, the increase in unsheltered homelessness has been linked to a significant drop in shelter funding. The Tempe Community Action Agency currently provides 40 shelter beds each night and is on track to support 400 people through the I-HELP Shelter program this year.
The agency is now working to expand its shelter capacity by adding 28 more beds. This expansion is part of the Building Resilience Capital and Program Expansion Campaign, which also includes services such as job placement, housing navigation, and other supportive measures for individuals experiencing homelessness.
The report and related funding efforts stress the importance of community support to keep unsheltered neighbors safe. Donations are helping to provide to-go food bags, safe shelter nights, and meals for those in need. Additional details and donation options are available at tempeaction.org/donate-now/social-media-donation-form.html.
